William Henry COBB #33537

8 JAN 1839 - 7 DEC 1895

Personal Information

  • BIRTH: 8 JAN 1839, Calhoun, Georgia, USA
  • BURIAL: Rehobeth Cemetery
    Fannin, Texas, USA
  • DEATH: 7 DEC 1895, Ladonia, Fannin, Texas, USA

Notes

During the War Between the States he served in the 22d Texas Cavalry (aka 1st Indian-Texas) Regiment. This unit was composed of volunteers from both Texas and the Indian Territory. It is not to be mistaken that the assigned personnel were native-American. He is popularly credited with having been born in Calhoun County, but it is more likely he was born in Floyd County, Georgia. Although well maintained, this cemetery is still in an isolated rural location. As a result it has been seriously vandalized. In Jun 2001, the only headstone of a person related to our family that could be positively identified was that of Sarah Terry, William Cobb's first wife.

In Sep 1877, Cobb and Eliza petitioned the Fannin County court to have Cobb named as the legal guardian of Conyer Fuller, Eliza's daughter by her marriage to Joel Conyers Fuller. The motion was granted. Following Eliza's death not quite two years later, some discord arose among Fuller relatives concerning Cobb's continued guardianship of the child. The matter was resolved in court with Cobb being sustained as the child's guardian. He continued making regular reports to the court concerning the child's welfare all the way up to Jan 1893, when he reported she had come of age.
