As we research our family lines, we occasionally encounter individuals who are well known in historical records. For those descended from early founding families—often described as the “first off the boat”—it is not unusual to discover connections that extend broadly across history. None of the individuals listed here are considered close relatives by any reasonable measure; however, tracing these historical links has been an enjoyable and informative part of the research process. For ease of exploration, notable individuals have been organized into categories such as Political, Military, Nobility, and others.
As with all good stories, there are a few darker chapters as well. In genealogy, even the “bad guys” (and girls) deserve a place at the table—after all, every family tree has at least one black sheep. While researching connections to the rich and famous, I inevitably encountered individuals who became infamous or notorious throughout history. Their stories are often dramatic, sometimes violent, but always fascinating, adding another layer of color to the past.
