____ - 26 NOV 1807
Personal Information
- OCCUPATION: Printer
- TITLE: the Printer
- DEATH: 26 NOV 1807, South Carolina, USA
Notes
John Miller was a printer by profession, and one of the earliest arbiters of "Freedom of the Press". From 1769-1771, he published a series of articles called the "Junius Letters". These were public letters (about sixty in all) addressed to the King of England, protesting censorship of the press. He was tried and acquitted, but later imprisoned for a time, anyway. Undoubtedly, this was a major consideration for his decision to immigrate to the American colonies.
His Will was probated on Jan 4, 1808. In it he did not mention his wife (probably indicating she was already deceased) nor did he designate any executor. He did name children John, Wilkes, William, and Elizabeth Miller; also grandchildren Marian Edwards and Mary Ann Hutson. The only estate specified was land "on 18 Mile Creek and Bear Swamp." Witnesses were William Robertson, Joseph B. Earle, and James Wood.
