In 1892 this family took a homestead near the Sisston Indian Reservation in South Dakota. William rode a horse about 18 miles out from the Reservation in Roberts County, shoveled a hole as a well to be called an improvement and stayed there until the claim was certified. In 1901 they sold the homestead and bought a farm in Eden Valley, Minnesota. The move was made by box car to Paynesville, Minnesota, the nearest rail point, some 14 miles from the Valley. From Paynesville, the move was by team and wagon in a cold January 1901.
