Dr. Andrew Jackson Sellards, son of John and Annie (Alford) Sellards and grandson of Hezekiah Sellards was born December 22, 1806 on Buffalo Creek in Floyd County, Kentucky.
About 1820 Andrew journeyed some 60 miles to Greenup County, Kentucky, where he found employment on the farm of John Hartley. Ten years later, in Greenup, on 27 Nov 1830, he married Mary Elizabeth Hartley, born October 3, 1812, daughter of John and Sally (Goble) Hartley (the real farmer's daughter). Andrew and Mary established their first home near Old Town in Greenup County. Later they moved to Carter County, Kentucky. Six of their eight sons served in the Civil War. One was killed during the war and of the other seven sons, four were to become doctors and three became farmers in Lewis and Carter Counties. Andrew died about 1859 and Mary Elizabeth died about 1891.
