Notes
Samuel Thomas Sellards, son of Hezekiah Sellards, was born in Virginia about 1773. He appears to have died between 1830 and 1840, probably in Lawrence County, Kentucky. Samuel married (1) in Tazewell County, Virginia between 1801 and 1804 (the Clerk did not record the date in the county records) Nancy Daniel, widow of James Daniel. Samuel came with his brother, John, to help establish the Sellards Settlement on Buffalo Creek in 1794 and apparently returned to Virginia to marry Nancy Daniel. After this marriage, Samuel brought his bride and three step-sons, Isom, Thomas and George Daniel, to Kentucky. Descendants of these three step-sons consist of most of the Daniel and Daniels along the Big Sandy River. There was an early Daniel family in Pike County and whether the Pike group is related is not known.
On June 4, 1804, Samuel received a land grant of 300 acres on the Levisa Fork of Big Sandy. This may have been about the time he settled in Lawrence County, Kentucky.
The 1810 Census for Samuel lists four males b 1800 to 1810, tow males born 1784 to 1800 and Samuel born 1784 to 1794 and one female born 1765 to 1794 in his household. One of his step-sons, Isom was married at this time. Samuel is missing in the 1820 Censuses of the area. In the 1830 Census we find one male born 1815-1820, one male born 1800-1810 and Samuel born 1770-1780, one female born 1820-1825 and one female born 1770-1780.
There is a marriage record for one Samuel Sellards listed in the Lawrence County records as of 22 Oct 1833 but, the clerk failed to list the brides name.
There is another marriage record for Samuel Sellards and Polly Lowe, recorded in Lawrence County records as of 15 Feb 1834. One of these marriage records may be for Samuel Sellards the son. By tradition, Samuel m (2) a widow Hayes.
On 16 Apr 1850 a Mary Sellards placed a lawsuit against John Hayes in Floyd circuit Court. This suit indicated Mary had remarried Elijah Pruett in 1824 and that Elijah died in 1834. Children of Mary and Elijah Pruett were John, Elizabeth, Elijah, Uriah, Henry and Lawrence, all being under age 21 in 1850. There may be no connection but, there is a question as to whether she was the Polly Lowe of 1834.
Tazewell County, Virginia records reveal a lease by Nancy (Daniel) Sellards of the late James Daniel farm and of later deeds of sale transacted through the Floyd County Court to Tazewell County for the three step-sons to sell the farm of James Daniel in Tazewell County.
