[N418] Jed ran for County Judge of Lawrence County on two occasion both unsuccessful. One story of his electioneering dealt with his fear of dogs. Coming to one residence, he had opened the gate, and had crossed the large yard to the front porch, when a large dog rounded the corner of the house. Jed took off running for the gate, about the time the lady of the house opened the front door. She yelled at the fleeing visitor, "What are you running for?" without a pause, Jed yelled back over his shoulder, "I am running for County Judge, vote for me." Another episode occurred January 4, 1938. Reverend Jed was in conversation with two gypsy men, near his home, about three miles south of Louisa. While engaged in the conversation, a gypsy lady in the group, slipped up and picked his pocket, taking his wallet with $8. Later, after the gypsies left, he discovered his loss, and surmising what had occurred he employed a neighbor to drive him in giving chase. The sped south on the Mayo Trail, overtaking the Ohio car at the mouth of Meades Branch. Jed upon recovering the wallet, collected an extra dollar to pay the boy who drove the chase car. Jed then allowed the gypsies to proceed on their way toward Paintsville.
