[N39] Michael Borders, son of John and Catherine (Sellards) Borders and grandson of Hezekiah Sellards was born ca 1787 near Walkers Station in the present Bland County, Virginia. On June 28, 1809 a marriage bond was entered in the Floyd County, Kentucky records for Michael's marriage to Christinia Pack, born March 1, 1788, the daughter of George and Mary Pack. The following marriage license request or permission slip was filed for Michael.

to Mr. Mayo Sur Giv of I request the favor of you that youre ald grant me a pere of lisons fur Mikel Borders & Christener Pack as have their noshen to joyn in matremony thus from humbel sarvent.

Also the following permission slip was filed for the bride Christinia:

This is to certify that I was twenty one years of age the first of last March from the best information I can get. These are therefore to authorize the clerk of Floyd County, to show license for my marriage to Michel Boardders and given under my hand the 27th of June 1809.

Please note the permission slip for Michael was attested his uncle Thomas Wiley. It is interesting to note Jenny signed as Janie Wiley. I am confident this was Jenny's signature for Jenny's daughter Jane would have only been 15 years of age and thus under age to sign this permission slip.

In the August term of Floyd County Court in 1814, Michael was appointed as surveyor of the road from the mouth of Paint Creek to the mouth of Toms Creek.

Also in the same term of Court, Michael was appointed as the surveyor of the road from the mouth of Toms Creek to the pictured beech on Georges Creek. This pictured beech is probably the one located at the mouth of Horse Picture Branch. According to the local story, Horse Picture Branch obtained its name from an exceptionally large beech tree which stood on this branch. The Indians had carved out a one horse stall in the trunk of the tree and just over the stall they had carved the picture of a horse.

In 1821 we find the following land warrant and survey record for fifty acres patented to Michael.

Kentucky Land Office Warrant No. 5141
To the principal surveyor of Floyd or Montgomery Counties. This shall be your warrant to survey and lay off in one or mre surveys, (by yourself of deputy) for Samuel May, his heirs and assigns, the quantity of 50 acres of land due unto the said May, but virtue of an act of assembly, entitled "An Act to amend an act to open a road to the Virginia line, by way of Prestonsburg, and for other purposes." Approved 4th February 1820, the commissioners having certified according to the provisions of said Act. Given under my hand, and the seal of said office, on the 11th day of December, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and twenty.

The back of the warrant reads "Michael Borders 50 Acres. Recorded and Examined. Recd May 11th 1821. No. 4570, Grant Filed 14th Nov 1821 RBF P20"

On May 6, 1848 Michael gave the above 50 acres, patented in 1821, to his daughter Catherine and her husband Joseph R. Davis per Lawrence County Deed Book D, page 226.

Michael purchased from John Borders on June 15, 1848 100 acres on Georges Creek. See Lawrence County Deed Book D, page 27.

August 22, 1853 Michael and Christinia sold to Samuel Murray 25 acres on the banks of Sandy near the Chestnut School. This is recorded in Lawrence County Deed Book D, page 472.

Christinia died of dropsy at their home on Georges Creek on August 15, 1855.

On April 15, 1860 Michale sold 50 acres on Georges Creek to Mary Bowen, see Lawrence County Deed Book F, page 442.

The 1860 Lawrence County census lists Michael and Matilda as husband and wife. The relationship of Christinia and Matilda is not known at this writing. According to the Lawrence County, Kentucky marriage records, Michael married Matilda on May 30, 1863. The parents of Matilda Pack are not listed on the record.

March 12, 1863 Michael, John Burton and Emanuel Nelson sold 160 acres on the left hand fork of Georges Creek to Joseph R. Davis. This deed is signed by Michael, John Burton, Elizabeth Burton and Emanuel Nelson and witnessed by Henry Borders and Ann Burton. See Lawrence County Deed Book F, page 581.

June 15, 1865 Michael and Henry Borders leased 30 acres at the mouth of DeBoard Branch to William Cummings and William Stewart. See Lawrence County Deed Book G, page 548.

August 2, 1868 Michael Borders, Sr., Daniel Borders and Wallace Borders sold a tract of land on the left fork of Georges Creek to Anderson Castle. This deed is signed by Michael, Daniel Borders, W. Wallace Borders, Mary Borders and Francis Jennie Borders. It was attested to by Jacob Castle and William Lyons. See Lawrence County Deed Book N, page 392.

Documents such as the deed above listing Michael Borders, Sr. would on the surface indicate a son named Michael, Jr. Actually the designation of senior was used to distinguish the difference between Michael and his grandson, Michael, a son of Henry borders, when the younger Michael became of age.

Lawrence County Deed Book N, page 433 lists a deed by Michael to his daughter, Elizabeth Burton, for a tract on DeBoard Branch of Georges Creek.

These are a few of the deeds issued by Michael or by Michael in conjunction with members of the family.

One of his last deeds made December 12, 1871 was written to settle a portion of his estate and to make provisions for his wife Matilda. Below are excerpts from this deed for those who may be interested in its content. This deed also refers to other deeds of partial settlement.

This Indenture made the 12th day of December 1871 between Michael Borders of the first part and Henry Borders of the second part, both being in the county of Lawrence and State of Kentucky. Michael Borders doth bargain and sell unto henry Borders a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the county aforesaid on the left hand fork of Georges Creek and bounded as follows to wit: (Then follows a description of the boundaries) for which land Borders aforesaid pays unto Caty Davis and Milly Thompson $50.00 each, to be paid in trade in twelve months after Michael Borders decease, except if Milly Thompson or her heirs bring suit the $50.00 is paid. All excepting the land where William DeBoard lives it bounded as follows: (follows a description of the land) Michael Borders leaves the house for Matilda Borders so long as she lives and at her death said land falls back to said Henry Borders and his heirs, also except the school house bottom Daniel Borders is to have. All the land that said Michael Borders owns in said boundary for which land the said Henry Borders is pay amount above written. This deed was signed by Michael Borders and Matilda Borders.

Then on October 20, 1873 Michael made his last will and testament in the form of a deed recorded in Lawrence County Deed Book K, page 411.

Known by all men presents that I Michael Borders of the County of Lawrence and State of Kentucky living on the Big Sandy River on the Levisa Fork now being in the 86th year of my age and having accumulated a small portion of this world's goods and lands through the kind services of God knowing according to nature that my stay in this world and the pilgrimage of my life will soon end and will being blest with reasonable health and the proper use of my mind as much so as could be expected for a man of my age and feeling desirous before my departure from this life to dispose of a part of my estate of land. i feel it necessary at present to deed Daniel Borders the portion of land that i do allow for him and now I will begin (follows a description of the boundaries) and horse mill delivered up to him now and the little piece of land where the mill stands.

The above deed was signed by Michael and witnessed by William Charles, Daniel Bowen and James Boyd.

According to family tradition Michael was named for his uncle.

The descendants of Michael hold an annual reunion the first Sunday after the July 4th weekend. Generally this reunion is held at Camden Park, Kenova, West Virginia and occasionally in Central Park, Ashland, Kentucky.

Just where Michael and his wives are buried have not been found, though they may have been buried in an old Borders cemetery, now overgrown, atop a ridge about a half mile up the small road which intersects with the old Mayo Trail in front of the Freewil Baptist Church just south of Ulysses, Kentucky.
