He enlisted on 01 Jun 1846, in Company M, 1st Regiment, Tennessee Mounted Volunteers, for service during the War With Mexico. He was seriously injured on 21 Aug 1846, by the explosion of the steamboat Enterprise on the Rio Grande River. Unable to continue performing the duties of a soldier, he received a surgeon's certificate of disability and was discharged on 28 Mar 1847.
