Notes

In August 1861, he resigned his law practice to organize and command Cobb's Georgia Legion, for service during the War Between the States. He was promoted to Brigadier General in November 1862. On December 13, 1862, during the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia, he received a bullet wound in the leg which resulted in his death from the loss of blood. The location is now part of the Fredericksburg National Battlefield Park. A marker indicates the spot where he fell which was within sight of his mother's girlhood home. He was admitted to the Bar in 1842. During his career he edited twenty volumes of the Georgia Supreme Court Reports (1849-1857), prepared "A Digest of the Statute Laws of the State of Georgia" (1851), and a new state criminal code (1858-1861). He was a militant seccessionist, and during the Georgia Convention was Chairman of the committee that wrote a new state Constitution in 1861, and later helped write the Confederate Constitution.
