Maor Nigel William Alexander was born on 27 July 1925. He is the son of Major Sir Lionel Cecil William Alexander, 6th Bt.and Hopeful Merrison Rose Hurrell.

Maor Nigel William Alexander was educated at Haileybury College, Haileybury, Hertfordshire, England.

During the Second World War, he served in the Grenadier Guards and gained the rank of Major.

He married Anne Wheatley, daughter of Bernard Ambrose Wheatley, on 5 December 1964.
