Notes

He became a well-recognized minister in the Episcopal faith, and at the time of his death was the Archbishop of Alabama. His line has retained the 's' at the end of the surname. At the age of 17 Cobbs began teaching school and studying on his own for the ministry. With no formal training Cobbs was confirmed and ordained a deacon on the same day, and in 1825 was ordained a priest. He served as chaplain for the University of Virginia and rector of churches in Petersburg, Virginia and Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1844 he moved to Alabama to serve as the state's first Episcopal bishop. Cobbs oversaw the early development of the diocese in Alabama.

Note: According to A HISTORY OF BRISTOL PARISH, VIRGINIA; Rev. Phillip Slaughter; Richmond; 1879; the Rev. Nicholas Cobbs married his own first cousin, Lucy H. L. Cobbs. The bond for this marriage states she was the daughter of Edmund Cobbs, which does corroborate this information. The Bondsman was one M. H. Garland. The ceremony was performed by William S. Reid.
