Gilbert was born 4 January 1930 on the Roisum farm, near Tingelstad, in the Hadeland district of Norway per the Gran parish records. (The stone is in error.) Although the stone says Gulbrand, he was actually baptized as Gudbrand Gudbrandsen per Gran parish records. His parents were Gudbrand Olsen and Kirsti Gudbrandsdtr, who had married 4 January 1821 in Hadeland, Norway.

Gudbrand left Lunner, Norway for America on 11 June 1850 on the ship "Vesta." In abt November 1854 he married Martha. They had 13 known children. Not listed below are 2 children who died very young: Ole (1858-1859), Christian (1862-1863).
