Sir John Stapleton was known as the Black Knight as his armor was black instead of the more normal silver metal of others. Sir John went to Ireland with Strongbow (Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke) on behalf of King Henry II. Sir John was awarded 50,000 acres of land covering Tipperery and some of Kilkenny. He then set him self up as the lord of the area and soon had a son, Redmund.
Sir John Stapleton is considered the founder of the Irish Stapletons.
