He was an 1808 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College; and 1810 of Philadelphia College.

In 1812, the Executor of the estate of John Poindexter (John P. Cobb's maternal grandfather, sold the plantation called "Sunny Side" to John P. Cobb and wife Jane Garland. They sold the property the following year to Mr. Newell Baker.
