George Edward SCALF #9078
14 MAR 1897 - 1982
BIRTH 14 MAR 1897, Dassel, Meeker, Minnesota, USA
DEATH 1982, Swan River, Manitoba, Canada
Historical Notes
Initially George entered the farm machinery business in Coronach, Saskatchewan. In the 1920's the great drought hit the western USA and Canada, which forced him out of business. Dust and sand piled everywhere, against the fences and barns, and over machinery, much of which had been repossessed from bankrupt ranchers.
Still later the grasshopper plague hit the area. The hoppers consumed everything that was edible. relief trains doled out food to the inhabitants.
George then moved in 1939 to Swan River, Manitoba, a town about the size of Prestonsburg, Kentucky and started another farm equipment business. He was elected Mayor of Swan River and by 1958 had served nine years.
