Historical Notes

During the Civil War, the Union Guerrillas swarmed over John and Clarinda's farm, destroying all their personal effects, took the hogs and cattle, drove the team away. They had a rough time living through the winter of 1863-64, just barely escaping starvation. Weak and with only hand tools to work the farm, John fell to the task too stringently. As a result pneumonia took its toll in May 1864, John died. Clarinda, with her four orphaned children, left with her father's party for Meeker County, Minnesota in 1866.
