Notes

Joseph had an amazing familiarity with a vast store of poetry, which he had committed to memory. In particular the works of Robert Burns. At the urging of his children, a book of his own poems, titled Spirit of the Mountains in Ryme was published in 1964. At the age of 14 J. D. took the Martin County, Kentucky teachers exam, passed it and had taught eleven pubic schools before was twenty-four years old.
