Notes

William is supposed, per family tradition, to have bought the first cook stove, turning plow, and oil lamp on Georges Creek. Women came from miles around to see Abigail cook on her iron stove. The story also reports that for quite some time that the neighbors were fearful the coal oil lamp would blow up. for about 10 years Bill ran a very extensive timber business, running staves by barge to Cincinnati, Ohio. He also rand a carding factory, carding wool and preparing it for running cloth. Also he was the first to buy a steam grist mill in the Sandy Valley, per tradition in the family. Bill served as captain of the home guards during the Civil War, being stationed at Louisa, Kentucky. He apparently was never discharged from service.
