George grew to manhood in Paintsville, Kentucky. When he was nineteen he attended school at Carlisle, Kentucky where he completed his education. George then taught school for fifteen years and was considered one of the leading instructors in the county. In the 1890's he devoted his time to the timber business in the Big Paint area and Betsy Layne in Floyd County, which was a very successful endeavor. In 1899 he began a new career with the budding coal industry and for seventeen years was most energetic in this field. Into the vastness of the Eastern Kentucky hills he preceded the coal tipples and railroad, negotiating for mineral rights and became one of the leading figures in preparing the way for the great coal operations of the Big Sandy and Kentucky River valleys. Except for two years, 1914-1916, when he resided at Wayland, Kentucky, George maintained his residence near Paintsville, Kentucky. While at Wayland he was elected Police Judge. In 1916 he retired from active business life to his residence on Main Street in Paintsville.
