[N1364] John was with the Hanover County minutemen, under Patrick Henry, in the first armed resistance in Virginia, during the American Revolution. In 1778, he was Judge of the Admiralty Court, and in 1781, he was Speaker of the House of Delegates. His second son, John, was tenth President of the United States.
