[N297] Arch, a pro-Confederate, enlisted in Company A, Fifth Kentucky Mounted Infantry, organized at Prestonsburg, Kentucky by Colonel Andrew Jackson May. He was captured by the Union troops after the battle of Middle Creek and along with several others was sent to a prisoner of war camp in Michigan where he was held for the duration of the war.

Archibald returned to his family then living on Johns Creek. He resided there most of his life near the present Tomahawk, Martin County, Kentucky, though he lived some years on Dick's Creek, a branch of Johns Creek in Floyd County.

Archibald was a stone mason by trade, specializing in chimneys and hand hewn stone fireplaces. He was a member of the United Baptist Church. Archibald and Sarah were originally buried in a cemetery on Dick's Creek but were exhumed and reburied in the Government Relocation Cemetery at Auxier, Kentucky.
