Notes

Benjamin was Mayor of New Romney, first in 1736, and thereafter in 1740, 1743, 1746, 1749, 1752, 1754, 1756 and died during his mayoralty on 6th October 1756. He is buried in the South aisle of New Romney church and the memorial stone shows his arms impailed with the Grebells'. In the South aisle of the church is a mural inscribed: "Here lyeth the body of Benjamin COBB fourth son of Robert Cobb and Catharine his wife. He married Catharine daughter of Allen Grebell of Rye, Gentleman, by whom he had five children Catharine, Mary, Ann, Benjamin and Thomas. The four last survived him. Seven times he served the office of mayor of this corporation and being again elected he died during his mayoralty October ye 6th 1757 aged 40 years."
