Notes

Messiah Long has acquired an undeserved tainted reputation as being quite a womanizer. LDS records can be found showing he had child producing relationships with at least three different women, two of them named COBB. The same source also identifies these women as being named Sarah and Frances, and assigns two different sets of children to them. It is apparent that this claim has been spread far and wide by a host of researchers. However, a thorough examination of available documentation over an extended period of time shows this entire story to be completely false. An additional claim has been forwarded that he was involved in a relationship with Frances Caroline Adams, daughter of Robert Cobb and his mistress Nancy Adams. This researcher will be the first to admit that due to the inconsistency of certain census enumerations, a clear understanding of just "who married who" where the Cobbs of upstate South Carolina is concerned can be very confusing. However again, a thorough examination of available documentation (particularly when viewed over an extended period of time) more than puts this accusation also to rest. Messiah does not deserve the reputation he has been given.

Masiah Long was married only once. Depending on which census is viewed, a different name is given his wife, either Sarah or Frances, but it is clearly the same woman being listed each time. I have named her Sarah Frances. She was born about 1815 in South Carolina. Her maiden name was not COBB. The only Cobbs having children in that time frame, in that area, was the Rev John S. Cobb and wife Frankey Smith. Their children are well documented, therefore this woman is summarily eliminated.

Whatever her maiden name, she outlived Masiah Long by at least 30 years. She was enumerated on the 1900 census of Franklin County, Georgia, living in the household of her grandson Silas Cobb, son of daughter and son in law Nancy and Robert Cobb Jr.
