John's will as recorded in Will Book 3, page 273, Lawrence County, Kentucky records as follows:
I John Borders Lawrence County Kentucky being of sound and disposing mind but feeble health being sixty six years old do make this my last will and testament. I give and bequeath to my son William Francis Borders, usually called Tobe the sum of eight hundred dollars for his maintenance, this being the same is a part of the fifteen hundred dollar note owing me by my son Nathan Borders. My intention is and I so will that my sons Joseph and Nathan are charged with the keeping and maintaining of the said Wm Francis jointly and they are to have the benefit of the said sum of money four hundred dollars each and at the death of the said Wm Francis the said Joseph and Nathan is each to have any unexpended of the said sum above named.
To my son Wallace Borders I give and bequeath the sum of one hundred dollars out of the balance due on said note, out of any expended balance of said note and of any other assets of my estate after my decease and after my burial expenses are paid I will and bequeath to all my children except Wm F, Nathan and Joseph an equal part of said balance.
