According to Scurlock family tradition he was disenchanted with the outcome of the War Between the States, and determined to migrate to South America, as did many other southerners. He died at sea while enroute. It is known his widow and children did live for a time in Brazil, but finding conditions there too harsh, they eventually returned to Choctaw County, Alabama, sometime before 1900.
