In October 1897, Simon traded his spotty horse for a sulky plow and the local comment "and now we want to see him get a fan and an umbrella on it and watch him raise corn next summer."

This couple adopted Annie Borders, a niece of Alice's. One daughter of Simon's married Clark Meade. This daughter died at Peach Orchard in March 1902. Her two orphaned children were educated at the Masonic Widows and Orphans Home in Louisville, Kentucky. These two children were living with Simon, their grandfather, at his death.
