Phoebe Sellards, daughter of John and Susannah (Sullivan) Sellards and granddaughter of Hezekiah Sellards, was born ca 1830, in Floyd County, Kentucky and died ca 1906. She married Harvey Washington Stratton.
Phoebe Sellards lived most of her married life on Mare Creek. She was called Aunt Phoebe by all her neighbors. Her life was filled with hard work, which was under near pioneer conditions. Her children's education attests to the strength of a family of this period and locale. Her character and high sense of ethics and religion were imparted to become embedded in the lives of her children.
The garden of Phoebe's was filled with rare herbs and many flowers. She secured and attempted to grow a coffee tree but it soon died from the adverse climate.
Phoebe died before her husband but he, a large landowner on Mare Creek, did not long survive. Side by side they were laid to rest in the Stratton Cemetery on Mare Creek.
