On Saturday afternoon, Aug 15, 1925, Lewis drove to Louisa with his wife, mother-in-law and five children. They started home about 5 p.m. by the way of the Mayo Trail (US23). As they were going down the Patrick Gap Hill, about six miles from Louisa, there was a wagon ahead traveling near the left side of the highway. Lewis sounded his horn for the wagon to move over so he could pass. The wagon driver was slow to respond so he attempted to pass on the right. Just as he reached the passing point the wagon swung to the right resulting in a collision and the car was thrown from the road. Laura and her three year old daughter, Helen Louise, were killed in the accident. Her mother and one child received broken bones.
