[N433] Walter was serving a lunacy warrant just north of Paintsville on November 26, 1966. When he stepped upon the porch he was struck in the head by a shotgun blast and died instantly. His deputy, Curt Delong, on the porch step at the time, was also wounded, but recovered after undergoing surgery at the Paintsville Hospital. The person on whom the warrant was to be served apparently committed suicide only minutes after Sheriff Meek was shot, for he was dead on the arrival of other officers rushed to the scene. Faye was sworn in November 28, 1966, to succeed her husband until the November 1967 election.
