[N401] The following will for John Burton, as recorded in Will Book 1, page 74, Lawrence County, Kentucky.

Lawrence Co., Kentucky

Know all men by these presents that I John Burton of the Co and state aforesaid now being in the 88th year of my age and being afflicted with a death like disease and warned by the course of nature that my pilgrimmage will soon end and having accumulated a small patrimony of this worlds goods through the kind mercy of God am desirous to dispose of the same in the following manner and although being blest with reason and the proper use of my mind yet not capable of writing myself have employed the hand of Joseph R. Davis to write this my last will and testament witnessth them -- I bequeath to my beloved wife two head of horses, two cows and calfs and one note of one hundred dollars due in October 1868 on Thomas Sparks and William Craft and John Sparks and a note of hundred dollars on the same men above named due October 1869 and all the house and kitchen furniture are to be applied to house and the use and benefit of my children through the ade an executor after paying my debts and paying my funeral expenses the balance to be put in land if possible and also a note on Thomas Sparks of $41 Dol and a open account of two dollars both now due and one note on Uncle Cole now due $10 and also 63 dollars on Isaac Stapleton open account.

N. B. the above is not enterlined but in one place that no $10 on Ancel Cole Turn over and furthermore I charge Andrew Burton and Henry Borders my executors to put this my will to probate after my death and to see that it is faithfully completed with in confirmation of which I do set or cause to set my hand and seal in the presence of these people this the 14th day of April 1868.
