[N1065] A complete and accurate listing of the descendants of William and Mary Cobb is difficult to develop. The size of their family reached its peak about 1810, when six sons and four daughters were enumerated in their household. There are twelve children listed here, and some researchers have extended that number to as high as fourteen. An additional claim has been made that sometime prior to 1820, William moved his family to the Pendleton District of South Carolina, and then after a time moved back to Lincoln County, North Carolina. This allegation is rejected out of hand for one reason.

William and brother James were appointed co-executors of the Last Will & Testament of their father Ambrose Cobb in Lincoln County, North Carolina, in 1797. Ambrose died about 1798-1799. By 1805, both the widow of Ambrose and James Cobb were also deceased, leaving William the sole surviving executor of the Cobb estate, which was extensive and not finally settled until 1818. This fact would logically make it necessary for William to remain in Lincoln County.

[N1037] The name of William Cobb's bride is not legible in the original records. However, some researchers claim her name was Abernathy. And, as Charles Abernathy, William's brother-in-law, was the Bondsman, this seems likely. Her first name "Polly" is discovered in a petition she addressed to the court of Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, in July 1833, requesting to be relieved of the duty of Administrator of the estates of her son Starling Cobb and her husband William Cobb. Additionally, the family bible of her daughter Dicy Richards refers to her as Mary.
